Topfield Center - Reopening Plan
Topfield Center continues to closely monitor the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).  Following the "NY Forward Safety Plan" for Putnam County, New York, we will  begin offering limited programming at Topfield Center; that is subject to change at any time.
Phases One &Two - Reopening Plan

Effective June 24, 2020

Independent participants may return for private 45 minute ground lessons.  Lessons are offered on a first come, first serve basis. Participants may not have any significant risk factors and must wear a mask during lessons. 


  • Designated access areas will be marked and areas throughout the barn will be restricted to staff only (including the Volunteer Lounge, tack room and feed room).

  • Only participants, a family member or caregiver, and staff are permitted to be at the facility, and only for scheduled lessons.

  • Visitors and guests are not permitted at Topfield Center, which shall remain closed except for scheduled lessons.

  • Restroom usage will be restricted to the lobby area only.  However, we ask that restrooms are only used in an EMERGENCY by participants. 

  • Barn staff  will move horse to designated paddock or grooming location for the instructor.  No one will be allowed in barn except barn staff.  

  • Staff and participants will have their temperature taken upon arrival with a non-contact forehead IR thermometer gun.

  • Participants will wait in their vehicles until their designated lesson time.

  • Instructors will meet participants out in the parking area and walk the participant over to grooming location through designated doorway. 

  • Staff and participants will sanitize their hands before and after each lesson.

  • Staff are required to wear masks at all times and will properly wash and sanitize their hands immediately before the lesson starts, and immediately after the lesson ends. 

  • Participants and caregivers are required to wear masks while on Topfield property while lessons are in session if outside their vehicle and unable to socially distance.

  • There will be a 15 minute break scheduled between each lesson to allow time for disinfecting protocols to be followed

  • Family members and caregivers should remain in their vehicles in between lessons or in designated waiting area only.

  • After the lesson, Instructor will walk the participant back to their vehicle.

  • Instructors who use disposable gloves are required to remove and dispose of the gloves immediately after the lesson and/or any contact with the participant, then immediately wash and sanitize their hands - then report immediately back outside to wait for their next participant or leave the property.

  • All equipment - including but not limited to - tack, adaptive equipment, pads, and reins will be removed from the horse by the Instructor and sprayed with disinfectant by the Staff. The horses halter, lead rope, and stall door will also be disinfected after they are returned to the stall.

  • At the conclusion of each lesson, the Staff will clean and disinfect bathroom door handles, as well as any other known surfaces that may be required to be cleaned and disinfected.
